Have We Forgotten?

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. – Winston Churchill

I recently re-watched the movie, Saving Private Ryan directed by Steven Spielberg. What a film! I have so much appreciation and gratitude for the Veterans of WWII. The sacrifices made by our whole nation… not only the boys and men that went to fight over seas, but also those that they left behind. Both of my grandfathers served in the US Army. One fought in the Pacific front, and the other stormed the beach of Normandy. My mom’s father was issued the Purple Heart for getting shot through the stomach and back trying to save one of his buddies in Okinawa. My dad’s father was an artillery sergeant in Germany working on tanks and jeeps in the dead of winter. All of these men left the comforts of home; there jobs, loved ones, and many didn’t come back because they were ridding the world of tyranny. So instead of living in a communist country speaking German, we are privileged to have the freedoms we have today.

World War II is most likely the war that I appreciate more than any other. Our Nations Civil War is great for many reasons as well, but it was our Nations issues that caused it. WWII however, was us answering the call. We as a nation said, “No, we can’t stand by and allow this to happen any longer.”

Another thing that I love about America during this time; is that while our soldiers were fighting; our nation, (my grandmothers) were working in factories making ammunition, weapons, receiving telegrams, comforting those that lost loved ones, working in hospitals, and praying for their sweethearts. I can’t imagine the sleepless nights, memories, and holidays just waiting.

Do I agree with everything that’s going on with this war in Iraq? No, but I’m tired of the griping and complaining, and the harassment of our troops about being nice to prisoners, and how that we need to be more humane to the captured slime that has no trouble cutting off the heads of our people. What is this world’s problem? War is not a game of monopoly!!! It’s nasty…like Sherman said, “It’s Hell.”

So I would like to say thank you to my family and friends currently fighting, our veterans, and my grandfathers for their courage and valor that they so flawlessly displayed.
